Twisted Fringe Tutorial

After completing the body of the beadwork, follow these simple steps to add twisted fringe.

1.    Starting from either the left or right side of the body, take the needle down the base bead.

2.    Add the first half of fringe beads, an end bead and the turn bead.

3.    Go back up the end bead.

4.    Add the second half of the fringe beads.

5.    Put the needle down.

6.    Hold the thread as close to the last bead you added as possible. Hold it tight.  Lift it so that the bag is dangling.  If the thread and needle get in your way, drape them over your arm.

7.    Spin the bag.  Keep spinning the bag -- in the same direction -- until the thread feels tight between your fingers.

8.    Check the "twist."  To do this, keep holding the thread tight between your thumb and finger, and hold it up next to the first half of the fringe.  It should twist around each other.

9.    If the fringe twists the way you want, keep holding the thread between your thumb and finger, and take the needle back up the base bead.  Don't let go of the thread until you get as close to the base bead as possible.  Go down the next base bead, and repeat from step two.

10.   If the fringe is too lose, continue spinning the bag.

After you have added the fringe across the bottom, weave the thread up into the bag in a back and forth manner to secure it.  It doesn't hurt to add extra security by weaving up for several rows, then weaving back down through the rows.
